Theophelia, my newest partner, designs and sells handmade jewelry from her store in Kumasi, Ghana. She uses Krobo beads and brass accents in her one-of-a-kind statement pieces.

Krobo Beads

Krobo beads are made by the people of Krobo Mountain in Ghana, West Africa. Many designs of Krobo beads are patterned to resemble old Venetian fancy trade beads. They are made from bottles and other glass items that are turned into powder, and then poured into molds to create beads. Decorations on the beads are made with a paste made of colored glass powder and water which is applied by hand using a thin wooden stalk. The beads are cooked a second time to fix the decor. Each bead is unique.

Brass Accents and Adinkra Symbols

The brass used to make these accents is primarily sourced from recycled metal. Casting these brass beads requires exceptional skill and attention to detail. Before engaging in any metalwork, artisans create a template or mold for the bead by hand and use beeswax to create the filigree work frame that is characteristic of many of these accent beads. Theophelia uses brass Adinkra symbols. Adinkra symbols were originally designed by the Asante craftsmen of Ghana. The symbols embody non-verbal communicative and aesthetic values, as well as the way of life of the people who designed them.
